How West Coast Port Congestion Impacts Cosmetic Industry Growth

Speaker:  Ivo T. Adamu, Managing Director - AIT TAHIPO

The LA/Long Beach port complex is the busiest in the entire nation, controlling about 40% of the US sea freight volume.  For the past 9 months it has been plagued by a crippling congestion that has had devastating consequences on the U.S. economy and to our industry as well.  Ivo Adamu’s presentation will explore some of the reasons for the congestion and its staggering impact on the trade community, for both  foreign-sourced components, products  and supplies as well as for Imported (and Exported )goods. He will discuss possible remedies for those in the Cosmetic industry and the importance of this issue to beauty industry growth and development. Ivo will also discuss FDA regulations on cosmetic imports and how importers can mitigate delays and by-pass potential examination of their goods in port which can cause further delays.

Ivo T. Adamu,  MBA,  LCB

Founder and Managing Director of AIT TAHIPO, an International Trade Consulting and Customs Brokerage firm located in Carson, California, Ivo Adamu is a 14-year industry veteran who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems (CIS) and a Master of Science degree in Business Administration. As a respected licensed customs broker and consultant who sits on multiple committees of the Los Angeles Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association (LACBFFA), Ivo will provide some unique insights into his areas of expertise including International Trade Law, Free Trade Agreements, US Federal Trade Regulations and Compliance, Customs Brokerage options, Development and optimization of Trade Lanes, and new import/export regulations for the growing markets of Central and West Africa.

Adamu notes there is still confusion within the beauty industry regarding the best way to import ingredients, products or components without FDA delays and examination.  Importers need to be accurate with both the label copy, documents and the intended use of their products, which may affect rates and classifications of what constitutes a cosmetic product. Ivo will explore FDA’s definition of drug versus cosmetic, and other factors affecting classification including claims made on the product, consumer perception and label copy.  All products must be labelled accurately and good manufacturing practices are essential.  Ivo will discuss resources for import challenges as well as potential remedies for port congestion problems. This is a don’t miss presentation for any companies considering importation of goods, component or ingredients as well as those who are exporting them.
