10 Tips for Creative Entrepreneurs

The market segment of Fragrances for the Home has been a growing category for several years but with few companies making the successful transition from Home to Personal Fragrance, Skin Care and Cosmetics . According to report published by Kline & Company, home fragrance retail sales reached nearly $5.6 billion in 2012, posting their highest rate of growth in five years, with Specialty stores the leading channel for home fragrances, accounting for nearly 30 percent of total market sales. Candles and Diffusers were the largest product categories, with sales of premium-priced candles experiencing growth at twice the rate of the home fragrance industry overall. These Candles are priced higher ( $15 to $45) and prestige comes from the channels of distribution as well as price point.  One promising method for growth, according to Kline, is to strengthen the connection between home fragrance and home decor, which bodes well for home decor specialty retailers. Our speaker this month can certainly address that question, as he is Designer as well as a Cosmetic Entrepreneur.

Sean O’Mara - Founder/CEO

Sean O’Mara began his career in the beauty industry with companies such as Proctor & Gamble Beauty and Murad Global Skincare. Using his expertise in the design field, O’Mara nurtured and advanced brand names like Sebastian, Wella and Trucco Makeup. While working for these beauty powerhouses, O’Mara found himself surrounded by the glamour of breathtaking locations, glamorous photo shoots, and decadent settings.  Directing photo shoots got him thinking about how to translate the glamour and elegance of these big-budget ad campaigns into actual properties people could buy and enjoy everyday. This line of thinking led O’Mara on his second career path. Using his investment-savvy and his trained eye for good design, he quickly built a reputation for infusing glamour into lackluster properties in the LA and London markets, and soon became the go-to designer for transforming spaces  “in  need.” His properties became among the fastest selling in Los Angeles and London.

In early 2006, a chance discovery at a Notting Hill bookshop became the link in his path to yet a third career. Found high on a shelf in an antique stall, a centuries-old apothecary manual sparked an idea that Sean spun into his new Home Fragrance line, Royal Apothic. The line was quickly expanded to become one of the fastest-growing niche beauty and fragrance brands in the US, with a dedicated coterie of fans. The British-inspired skin and body care items became must-haves for décor minded buyers.  “I wanted to create a product line so beautiful, you just had to leave it out,” O’Mara says. With this goal at the heart of Royal Apothic, the brand evolved to one of the first home/personal care niche lines using BirchBox, HSN and other distribution tools to spur its growth. Sean will share the story of his growth and success of his Lux Beauty Group at the April meeting.
